The Crates Cabinet is about using materials that, after a first life do not need to be disposed but because of the way of construction and use of material are perfect for a second purpose. The simple design concept makes you think about other furniture we buy as this storage serves its purpose of cabinet perfectly without the use of virgin plastic materials. In order to reinforce the concept, the crates configuration of every cabinet is different in size and colour. Depth and with of the crates is always the same but height is variable. Also there are an endless number of different models of crates depending on the purpose in their first life.

The Crates Cabinet provokes all kind of responses:

Crates Cabinet by Mark van der Gronden is produced from reused plastic crates and rough cold forged steel L-extrusions welded into a frame. The plastic crates become drawers guided and blocked by the steel L-extrusion. The use of materials and way of construction is in complete harmony creating an industrial impression.

In fact the crates are not mend to have a long life in the first place. They are often produced for transport and storage of fruits or vegetables. They have to protect the goods they carry very well while often dealing with rough handling. The use of the rough cold forged steel L-extrusion in the frame of the crates cabinet reinforces the character of the coloured crates.
