When Philips introduced the latest home appliances in the Alessi line in October 1994 in the Groninger Museum, the company announced a 'trendsetters in the field of kitchen appliances.

That prophecy came true. The Alessi line appeared so successful that the home appliances hardly were available at a surten moment and customers were put on a waiting list. The demand was four to five times greater than the supply.

Philips first had conducted extensive market research and had a fairly exclusive audience in mind. For that reason the Philips Alessi ine only was available in a few stores, giftshops and designershops.
The success explainable by the name Alessi. "Alessi products are collector items.

The Philips Alessi workshop appliances product line was the result of a colleboration between the Italian designer Alesandro Mendini, creative director at Philips Stefano Marzano and Aleberto Alessi. Designers Benny Leong, Seiya Otha en Roger Swales were respomcible for the executional designs of four of the products in the line. They got awarded in Amsterdam with the Kho Liang Ie prize for their designs in the Philips-Alessi line.

When the products came out in 1994 it was a total new design language for household appliances. This design language can be recougnized in later Philips products like the 'Sunrize and Cucina' although the pastel colors were replaced by ordanary off-white's.

Products from the Philips Alessi workshop line can be found in the collection of various museums around the world like the Moma in New-York.
