Wim Rietveld (1924 - 1985) son of world famous architect and designer Gerrit Th. Rietveld, positioned himself with simple functional, solid, practical designes. Wim Rietveld together with Kho Liang Ie and Friso Kramer belongs to the pioneers in the field of industrial design in the Netherlands. Wim Rietveld combined his studies at the Royal Academy in The Hague with a steady job in the workshop of his father. After graduating, from the fifties on he started to work for furniture manufacturers like Gispen, Circle and Ahrend, but he also developed agricultural machinery, boats, weighing equipment and subway trains. His work has won several awards at home and abroad.

Wim Rietveld succeeded W.H. Gispen who in 1949 left Gispen. He introduced the "furniture for a simple interior, entirely in line with the thinking of Good Living. Wim Rietveld than mainly designed furniture and living room lamps. The Gispen 1407 armchair, that he and Andre Cordemeijer developed together, was presented at the 10th Milan Triennale in 1954 with a gold medal.

His interest in the essence of products in conjunction with the technique meant that between 1960 and 1971 he worked on trucks, buses and subways and trains. For Vicon he designed agricultural implements, for Inventum he designed stoves, plate warmers and coffee maker.

The mindset of Wim Rietveld about industrial design; "good, solid, practical and inexpensive, fitted in well with the scientific objectives of the new Industrial Design at the Technical University of Delft. In 1973 he was appointed extraordinary professor there in the intermediate department of Industrial Design.
